The two methods

  • Mechanically attached (MA): membrane fastened in rows through to the deck; fasteners hidden in seams. Fast, economical, deck-dependent.
  • Fully adhered (FA): membrane glued continuously to the substrate. No point loads, no flutter, higher labor and adhesive cost.

(Ballasted systems — loose-laid under stone — are a third path with weight and wind-zone constraints; induction-welded hybrids blur the categories. Both worth asking about.)

What actually decides it

  1. Wind engineering. Uplift pressures from code (ASCE 7, applied to roofing through standards such as ANSI/SPRI WD-1) size everything. In hurricane and high-rise-edge zones, FA (or enhanced MA/induction systems) usually carries the calculation; in ordinary zones, MA passes economically.
  2. Deck. Steel deck holds fasteners well (MA-friendly); concrete favors adhered; gypsum/tectum decks often can’t hold screws at all — the deck decides, and field withdrawal-resistance testing (ANSI/SPRI FX-1) settles arguments about marginal decks.
  3. Building use. Sound-sensitive occupancies notice MA flutter drum; FA is silent.
  4. Budget honesty. MA’s savings are real; whether they’re worth it is a wind-zone and risk-posture question, not a universal.

Common mistakes

  1. Comparing an FA bid to an MA bid as if they were the same product at two prices.
  2. Value-engineering corner and perimeter enhancement out of an MA spec — those zones are where roofs leave buildings.
  3. Adhering over a substrate that failed (or never had) adhesion testing — ANSI/SPRI IA-1 is the field procedure for verifying substrate and adhesive suitability.

FAQ

Which is better in a hurricane? Neither “wins” — the assembly either meets calculated uplift or it doesn’t. FA and enhanced-fastening systems more commonly clear high-wind numbers; demand the uplift calculation and tested-assembly listing (FM/UL) either way.

Does fully adhered last longer? Not inherently; it removes flutter fatigue and point stresses, which helps at the margins. Installation quality still dominates. CRI has not found independent field data showing a service-life difference attributable to attachment method alone.
